You’ve taken out the trash, the food in the fridge is still within date. So what’s that sour odor coming from the kitchen?

Straight out of a vintage horror film — it’s the swamp monster from the kitchen sink drain!

Not really, but it certainly smells like it. Think about all the food, crumbs and bits of debris that are knocked down into your drain every day. They’re sitting there, waiting — harboring bacteria, resulting in a less than pleasant odor.

If this occurs frequently, we need to sit down and have a heart to heart. Or, you can simply follow this guide and fix sink drainage smells before company arrives!

Step 1

Pour one cup of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar down the sink. The mixture will bubble up for about 10 minutes. Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Baking soda and vinegar are great items to have on hand for household cleaning. Click here to learn what else they can do!

Step 2

While that’s bubbling, bring a pot of water to a boil. Next, pour the hot water down the drain to flush out the baking soda and vinegar mixture.

Step 3

Fill the drain of your garbage disposal with two cups of ice and one cup salt. Seems strange, but trust us — it’s a part of the magic process. Next, turn on cold water and run the disposal until the ice has melted. The goal of this step is to expel any gunk that’s collected on your disposal’s blades.

Step 4

Not fond of the vinegar smell? To help mask the cleaning agent, drop down natural citrus rinds (like orange, lemon or lime) in small pieces at a time. You’ll quickly move from “bleh” to “ah.”

It’s not a solution without the preventative.

You didn’t think we’d just fix it and leave you hanging, did you? To fix sink drainage smells for good, sprinkle some baking soda down the kitchen drain periodically. Baking soda is a mild alkali and dissolves grease fairly easy while eliminating odors. But, make sure to replace it every 30 days after you’ve opened the packaging.
